The much anticipated trailer of Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai is finally out. Have a look.

So far Dibakar’s record has been cent percent – 3/3. Will he deliver once again? Going by the trailer, it surely seems so. But then, political films are a different beast.

SEZ, activism, murder, accident, conspiracy theories and the mess and madness kicks in. And then a ball drops in – yeh khelne ki jagah hai kya? Aha, that Dibakar touch. So refreshing to see Emraan Hashmi getting out of his comfort factor and doing it without anything remotely sufiyana. Wouldn’t be surprised if he overshadows Abhay Deol. And Kalki looks perfectly vulnerable.

Strangely, the text doesn’t mention Khosla Ka Ghosla. It says “from the director of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Love Sex Aur Dhoka”. Why would you not mention KKG?

Kasam khoon ki khayee hai….yeh shahar nahi Shanghai hai – Ok, am sold. Now bring it on.

Writing credits include Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar Banerjee and unlike others it mentions the book Z by Vassilis Vassilikos.

At the end of it the only thing that doesn’t sound convincing is the title – Shanghai.

“Wouldn’t be surprised if he overshadows Abhay Deol.”

    Sarcasm ?

  2. @Rohwit says:

One word for the teaser – bakchod!!!!!

Also the music should be playing an important part in this film am sure. Cant wait

And yes, I wont be surprised if emraan hashmi overshadows abhay deol. He has immmmmmense potential….acting wala, but jab tak chalu maal bik raha hai to koi quality maal kyun sell karey? Its not sarcasm, its reality of Sow business (not show business)

    Awesome teaser!

    • desipsycho says:

Immense potential ? Emraan Hashmi is yet to do a character worth remembering. Abhay deol on the other hand, yet to do play a character not worth remembering.

      • Nidhi says:

He probably just means that Hashmi seems to play the meatier role.

      • @Rohwit says:

Thats what I meant. He has potential and will probably do a role worth remembering in your books. Ab chill maro. Trailer dekho.

Who said anything against abhay anyway? Reading too much too soon are we?

  3. RamanaK says:

Okay, why doesn’t the title make sense, again? I faintly recall NaMo saying it elsewhere that he wanted Ahmedabad (or Gandhinagar?) as the next Shanghai. Valid connect, given the references to NaMo elsewhere, no? Esp given the first title of “I wil bring Shanghai to India, – an Indian CM”.

  4. Ashwini says:

Don’t recall NaMo mentioning the Shanghai thing but every fuckin Chief Minister of Maharashtra since the past 20 years has been claiming that he will turn Mumbai into Shanghai. You have had Ministers and Babus taking guided foreign tours for that. I think it is clearly a reference to that. Besides, this Bharat Nagar I think is a reference to the numerous redevelopment projects going on in Mumbai with huge Builder-Mafia-Politician stakes. Perfect material for a political thriller. No problems with the title whatsoever but I have a feeling that we will miss Sneha Khanwalkar’s mad music. I will be glad If I am proved wrong by V&S.

@Ashwini: You might want to read about the bit on riverdevelopment project & the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (‘GIFT City’) here: http://www.caravanmagazine.in/Story.aspx?Storyid=1315&StoryStyle=FullStory.

      • Nidhi says:

Given the complete desi flavour of the film, it would probably have been a better choice to give it a more ‘earthy’ title in my opinion. Then again, since this is a Dibakar Banerjee film I’ll watch it even if it’s called Where Emraan Hashmi Finally Learns To Act And Kalki Learns To Speak Hindi And Abhay Deol Is Supposed To Be South Indian.

        • @Rohwit says:

BwhahahAh superb comment this! Kalki and hindi and in a remote city of India! Fascinating! :)

The last shot of the trailer is quite hilarious as you say but did you notice when the music starts in this teaser? When they show emraan smiling like a jerk standing next to abhay. Good shot eh!

          • Nidhi says:

Yes, yes. He looks like a loveable, but uncouth, jerk. It’s a welcome change from playing just a jerk.

  5. Nidhi says:

That final shot of Emraan Hashmi running on a street, carrying a CPU while screaming his head off was delightful. Cracks me up every time. In fact the last three shots of the trailer are superb.

  6. @Rohwit says:

    Background music mikke mccleary hmmmm

And no mention of lyrics writer…shoudl be ‘various’ then. Hmmmmm

  7. shivacarnage says:

I doubt Hashmi was the first choice for this role…though there are a lot people in our movies who can never be first choice for any role…after the trailer…Dibakar Banerjee is the only one worth caring about here…!!

  8. DullMull says:

are insiders koi ye toh bata do ki VS kyon or SK kyon nahi ?

  9. SJ says:

Well this is just me but I think Emraan Hashmi role in OUTIM was worth remembering. Off Late I even liked the Trailers of Jannat 2. So I don’t think anyone should rule him out not that anyone is doing it here. But in general he still is not a part of A-League. Hopefully this movie will turn a leaf. He is even coming in a movie called Ghanchakkar with Vidya B directed by R K Gupta(No One killed Jessica fame).

Loved the Trailer. Awesome Background score. Avid Bollywood buffs would know about this but still for those who don’t Mikey McLeary the man behind background music of Shanghai is the same man who gave Khoya Khoya Chand Remix And Hawa Hawai in Shaitaan(Bejoy Nambiar’s 2011 Movie with Suman Shridhar doing the vocals). Awesome Job. And What a movie it was !. Soo much looking forward to his next movie David. Oops I am digressing now.

Yes SK’s music score will be missed but she will be back with AK’s Gangs of Wasseypur( Waiting for it’s Trailer anxiously). Can AK pull of a 2 film mania ?. As far as VS is concerned I think the Bijli’s final word would have prevailed. Money Bags always prevail.

As far as Shanghai is concerned I don’t care what the fate of the movie is . I know for sure this one will work because of people involved and promising trailer but no one knows(Prime Example : Agent Vinod) but what I am happy about is Political thriller genre being explored in Bollywood after Rajneeti. I don’t recall good movies exploring this genre. I don’t count great movies like Haasil or Gulaal because that was University Politics.

Also loving to see Farooque Sheikh on screen after such a long time. Heard David Dhawan is planning to make Chashme Badoor Remake which is one of FS’s best work. I just shudder to even think how that will turn out to be.

  10. bksingh2009 says:

“sone ki chidhiya, Dengue, Malaria” – who wrote those lines? Dibakar?

  11. Thalassa says:

That Khoya khoya chand remix was an assault on my ears – gross!

The trailer looks interesting but I wonder how far Dibakar has stayed true to the book Z. I’ve read the book and seen the Costa-Gavras film. What is described in Z is significant because it gives a foreboding to the creation of conditions that lead to the Greek military dictatorship of 1967 (Gavras was in exile in Paris – hence the film was in French, not Greek). I wonder if that is the political message that Dibakar wants to convey :) – that we are stifling dissent and scuttling democratic processes in ominous ways.

By the way Z refers to Zei, which in Greek means “he(she) lives”. That’s how the title makes sense. I guess Dibakar also tried to be deliberately obscure in choosing to name the film Shanghai.

  12. SJ says:

@ Thalassa – Well to each one his own. I hv had conflicting views on Mikey’s version of Khoya Khoya Chand. I guess Sachin Da’s fans feel that the song has been spoiled and it’s sacred to even touch. Old song is divine. And I am not a fan of remixes either. I rather hate them except this one. May be it worked in the movie. I actually loved the way it was picturised. And Suman Sridhar has a very unique voice.

I’ve read the book and seen the film as well. Infact Dibakar plans to go to Greece to show the movie to VV before release. I think it shows how true he must have kept the movie to the soul of the book. And why not in my opinion Z is very relevant in present circumstances. He must be an old man now I guess so If the hill will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet will go to the hill.

    @ Desipsycho – True story mayte – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chashme_Buddoor_(2012_film). Ali
Zafar (I don’t think he is a bad actor) says it will be over the top and with David’s sensiblities. That can only define how it will turn out to be. Not looking forward to see this one. But I am sure everyone will watch it at least once. Hopefully no one will ever touch and try and remake Jaane Bhi do Yaaron. In this day and times of Remakes, I am always afraid these people can mess up classics. and with David dhawan you know never know. Some of comedies of 90′s are movies I would watch still if they are on TV and the movies he made in the previous decade will make you squirm or at least make me squirm. The other guy is Diveyendu sharma from PKP. I would have preferred the guy who played liquid – kartik sth. Oh well !!

  13. Thalassa says:

@SJ – I guess let’s just say we agree to disagree about Khoya Khoya Chand :)

Chashme Baddoor is one of my most favourite films of all time and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it over a dozen times. It never gets old for me. The news of David Dhawan remaking it is traumatic to say the least. Mujhe Dhawan ji ke ghar ke bahar dharna dena chahiye is zulm ke khilaf!

I think you are mistaken about the PKP actors. It was Divyendu Sharma who played Liquid and was pretty much the best thing about the film. I cannot imagine Ali Zafar playing Faroque Shaikh’s role – he may yet surprise me, but I’m not very hopeful.

    • SJ says:

@Thalassa – Sirf Aapko Kyun. Hum Sabko Dhawan ji ke bahar dharna karna chahiye. He will surely scar the movie once and for all. And you are right I did get the identities of Liquid of PKP mistaken and I am glad he is in the movie. Would surely like to see more of him. Let’s see what happens in this ajab gazab duniya.
